Did you know it’s possible to perform an incorrect flossing routine? Well, it’s true. Improperly flossing can do more harm than good, which is why our dentist, Dr. Robert Marder, encourages you to focus on your flossing technique and use the proper steps. To help you do so, he has some tips to share, which are:
-Use 18 inches of floss. Wrap the majority of the floss around both of your middle fingers. Leave about 2 inches of floss between the two fingers. This section will be used to clean between two teeth.
-Use your thumb and index finger to slide the section of floss between your teeth. If you have a hard time doing so, use a back-and-forth, sawing motion. Make sure not to snap the floss into place.
-Once the floss is in place, use it to clean the sides of the teeth and gumline. It’s important to remove all plaque and bacteria that reside there.
-To remove the floss, use the same back-and-forth motion to pull the floss out from the space.
-When you move to the next space to clean, use a new section of floss. It’s best to use clean floss to clean your teeth and gums.
